The Huron County Board of Developmental Disabilities has a very active recreation program that ranges from low-impact activities for the casual participant to structured athletics, such as our successful Special Olympics teams.
We offer individuals opportunities to participate in such leisure activities as bowling, bicycling and walking. We also attend movies, art museums, theater productions, indoor and outdoor musical concerts, the zoo, amusement park, and professional and high school sporting events.
We also sponsor a healthy living class, which educates individuals on healthy lifestyle choices. Class topics include healthy meal planning, healthy food selection, and portion size. The classes are person-centered and individuals develop personal goals. This, along with fitness and exercise goals, enables individuals to make appropriate and educated decisions for their particular situation. The class also collaborates with program nurses, local physicians, the OSU extension office, and local fitness and wellness professionals to deliver a “holistic” approach to health and wellness.
Each year, we sponsor the Christie Lane Recreational Volleyball League, in which teams of individuals with disabilities and typicals from the community participate. The league now has eight teams and more than 80 participants.
